About Providence, Rhode Island
Providence, Rhode Island promises an intriguing blend of Old World charm, modern metropolitan amenities and plenty of entertainment for visitors. Providence was founded by Roger Williams in 1636 and was one of the original Thirteen Colonies. In the early years Providence was a refuge for persecuted religious dissenters. After the Revolution War the economy shifted from maritime trade to manufacturing. The economy began to decline in the mid-1920’s and continued to deteriorate through the 30’s due to the Great Depression. The city has seen a rebirth in the 70’s. The cities largest employers today are the Rhode Island Hospital and Brown University.
From history to boats to animals, Providence has it all. Re-kindle romance gliding down the Woonasquatucket and Providence Rivers in an authentic Venetian gondola or stir up some fun motoring around Providence by land and by water on a Splash Duck narrated tour. Battleship Cove is home to the world’s largest collection of historic naval ships. The Golden Age of Yachting at the Herreshoff Marine Museum features over 35 classic sailing and power yachts. History buffs appreciate the largest percentage of National Historic Register buildings in the United States on Benefit Street. Called the “Mile of History,” 200 meticulously restored 18th and 19th century Colonial homes make up the Providence historic district. Nearby, the First Baptist Church, established in 1638, is the oldest Baptist Church in America. Animal lovers talk to the 1,500 animals and enjoy year-round special events at the Roger Williams Park Zoo. And, The Culinary Archives & Museum at Johnson & Wales University is a must-see for committed cooks.
When all the fun fuels a powerful hunger, the Providence restaurant scene fills the most ferocious appetite. Head to Federal Hill, called one of the “Top Five Little Italys in the U.S.” Guests at CAV on Imperial Place sip, savor and shop in a historic loft filled with art and antiques from around the world. Get the best steak in town at the sexy and sophisticated XO Steakhouse or the freshest local seafood at Big Fish. Get the drift? Providence delivers what it promises.
Hub to revolutionary, royalty and representative, the Union Oyster House captures the essence of America within its 250-year old walls as the oldest continuously operated restaurant in the United States.
